The Battle of Mine Run
The Battle of Mine Run occurred at Payne's Farm and New Hope Church, the first and heaviest clashes of this campaign, on November 27 to December 2, 1863. Meade attempted to march through the Wilderness in order to strike the right flank of the Confederate Army. Carr's division of the Union army attacked Johnson's division of the Condfederate army twice, and johnson counterattacked but his forces were scattered by the heavy fire and broken terrain. Lee withdrew after dark and prepared field fortifications along Mine Run. The next day, the Union army closed in on the Confederate's position, the skirmishing was heavy and since no major attack materialized, Meade came to the conclusion that the Confederate line was too strong and retired on the night of December 1-2, bringing the winter campaign to an end, resulting in an inconclusive victory.
