The Anaconda Plan
The Anaconda Plan was also known as Scott's Great Snake because it was proposed by General-in-Chief Winfield Scott. This Union plan was to surround the coast of the south with the navy and go up an around with soldiers to cut the confederacy in half. An important part of the plan was to also blockade the southern ports which would cut off their resources. The image of the snake caught on because it was like the Union was strangling their prey, the Confederacy.
