Mary Bowser was a union spy in the civil war. She worked in connection with Elizabeth Van Lew. She used multiple personalities to distract people in order to remain unknown. She spoke lack of knowledge so the confederates would think she was uneducated. No one would expect an uneducated black women to be a spy. She regularly visited the Libby Prison with food and medicine and helped many people escape.
