Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was a famous "conductor" or leader of the Underground Railroad. She herself was an escaped slave but returned 19 times to help more slaves escape and in all her trips, she never lost a single "passenger" or a slave attempting to escape. For the slave owners, she was a threat and her head would be rewarded with 40,000 dollars. However, for the slaves, she was a symbol of hope. She became friends with many abolitionists and took part in many anti-slavery meetings. During the Civil War she worked as a cook, a nurse, and a spy for the Union and once the war was over she settled down in Auburn, New York where she spent her life until she died in 1913.
