The Battle of Vicksburg
The "Siege Of Vicksburg" lasted from May 18th to July 4th, 1862. As the final military act in the Vicksburg Campaign, Major General Ulysses S. Grant and his army crossed the Mississippi River to drive the Confederate army, led by General John C. Pemberton into the defense lines surrounding the city of Vicksburg. 2 major assaults against the Confederate fortification that resulted in large casualties caused Grant to decide to besiege the city beginning on May 25th. The Confederate army then surrendered with 29,495 soldiers left. Combined with The Battle of Gettysburg, this battle is considered by some to be the turning point of the war. The Union won with 4,835 casualties and the Confederates had 3,202 soldiers killed or wounded. This battle cut off communication between Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi department for the rest of the war.
