Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was the most successful Union general during the Civil War. Like Lee, Grant was enrolled in the West Point Military Academy and graduated in June of 1843. He served under Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott and also was involved in the Mexican War. Grant was promoted to General in Chief of the Union forces which was a rank nobody had held since George Washington after the Battle of Chattanooga. He remained as the commander until the end of the war.
