United States Sanitary Commission Established by President Abraham Lincoln on June 9, 1861. It was made to oversee the hospitals for union soldiers.It was a private relief agency to support sick and wounded soldiers. Elizabeth Blackwell was a nurse during the war and shehelped set up this group.
